Earths magnetic field

The Earth’s magnetic field is the magnetic field that surrounds the Earth. It is sometimes called the geomagnetic field. The Earth’s magnetic field is created by the rotation of the Earth and Earths core. It shields the Earth against harmful particles in space. The field is unstable and has changed often in the history of the Earth. As the Earth spins the two parts of the core move at different speeds and this is thought to generate the magnetic field around the Earth as though it had a large bar magnet inside it. The magnetic field creates magnetic poles that are near the geographical pol ...

Earths orbit

All planets in our solar system follow an elliptical path. This path is known as an orbit. Earths orbit is not a perfect circle. If we were to draw the Earths orbit on a sheet of paper as a perfect circle, the width of the line would be larger than the elliptical path of the Earth. The Earths orbit takes about 365 days, this is also called a year. This means that in 365 days a year the Earth has gone around the Sun. From this we can find that the orbital speed of the Earth is about 108.000 kilometres per hour 67.000 mph through space. The closest distance Earth is to the Sun, or perihelion ...

Flat Earth

The idea of a flat Earth is that the surface of the Earth is flat. Belief in a flat Earth is found in the oldest writings. Early Mesopotamian maps showed the world as a flat disk floating in the ocean. This was a common belief until the Classical Greeks began to discuss the Earths shape about the 4th century BC. Eratosthenes 276 BC –194 BC calculated the circumference of the Earth quite well. From then on, few educated people ever believed in its being flat. People first started having the thought that the Earth is round in around 6th century BC. Then, Aristotle proved the Earth was round ...

Flat Earth Society

The Flat Earth Society is an organization claiming that the Earth is flat. It was started by Samuel Shenton in 1956. Charles K. Johnson was the leader and made his home the organizations base. The Flat Earth Society is thought to have disbanded after Johnsons death in 2001, but some websites still use the organizations name. Some people say NASA proved that the Earth is not flat by taking pictures of the planet from space. Others say the round Earth was proven long before NASA existed. The Society says the pictures are fake, and that NASA is a part of a conspiracy.

Milankovich cycle

A Milankovich cycle is any slow but regular change in the Earths orbit round the Sun, and the tilt of the Earths axis. The dynamics are complex. The changes affect the insolation sunlight falling on parts of the Earth. This leads to cycles of climate on Earth, at about 21.000, 41.000 years, 100.000 and 400.000 years. This whole field is still under active research. Using applied mathematics, Milutin Milankovic predicted that variations in eccentricity, axial tilt, and precession of the Earths orbit caused climate patterns on Earth. Similar astronomical theories had been advanced in the 19t ...

Orbital forcing

Orbital forcing is the effect on climate of slow changes in the tilt of the Earths axis and shape of the orbit. These orbital changes alter the amount of sunlight reaching the Earth by up to 25% at mid-latitudes. In this context, the term "forcing" is a physical process that affects the Earths climate. This mechanism is believed to be responsible for the timing of the ice age cycles. The timing of past glacial periods coincides very well with the predictions of the Milankovitch theory, and these effects can be calculated into the future. Note in the graphic the strong 100.000 year periodic ...

Origin of water on Earth

The origin of water on Earth is only partly known. Life as we know it depends on water, and most types of life started in the seas. Earth is the only planet known with liquid water on its surface. The water on Earth may have come from the Solar System as it formed, or it may have formed on Earth. Both are possible. Our planet is in the habitable zone, not so far out that all water freezes, and not so close to the Sun that all water evaporates into space. This is why liquid water, necessary for life as we know it, continues to exist on the surface of Earth. It was long thought that Earth’s ...

Spaceship Earth

Spaceship Earth is a world view encouraging everyone on Earth to act as a harmonious crew working toward the greater good.

Structure of the Earth

The structure of the Earth is divided into layers. These layers are both physically and chemically different. The Earth has an outer solid layer called the crust, a highly viscous layer called the mantle, a liquid layer that is the outer part of the core, called the outer core, and a solid center called the inner core. The shape of the earth is an oblate spheroid, because it is slightly flattened at the poles and bulging at the equator. The boundaries between these layers were discovered by seismographs which showed the way vibrations bounced off the layers during earthquakes. Between the ...
