Erik Homburger Erikson was a German-born American developmental psychologist and psychoanalyst. Erikson is known for his theory on psychosocial development of human beings. Erikson is also known for coining the phrase identity crisis. His son is Kai T. Erikson, a sociologist.

In 1970, Erikson won a Pulitzer Prize in General Nonfiction and won a U.S. National Book Award in the Philosophy and Religion category, both for Gandhis Truth.

Erikson died at the Rosewood Manor Nursing Home in Harwich, Massachusetts on 12 May 1994.
