Domenico Ghirlandaio

Domenico Ghirlandaio was an Italian painter. He painted during the Renaissance in Florence. He was an important painter in the time of the Renaissance. In about 1480, he became the official portrait artist for wealthy people in Florence. Domenico had a large painting workshop. His brothers David Ghirlandaio and Benedetto Ghirlandaio and his brother-in-law Sebastiano Mainardi worked with him. His son Ridolfo Ghirlandaio also was a painter. Michelangelo Buonarroti was his most famous apprentice. He started learning in Domenico’s workshop at age 13.

Italian Renaissance art

Italian Renaissance art is a style of painting and sculpture that began in the late 13th century with the work of the painter Giotto and a sculptor Nicola Pisano. Masaccio

Tommaso Guidi, better known as Masaccio, was a famous painter of the Italian Renaissance. He worked in Florence. Masaccio was a nickname that meant Fat Untidy Tom. He lived a very short life and only a few of his paintings exist, but they were so different to the style of other artists around him that they helped other painters to see things in a new way.

                                               

Lorenzo de Medici

Lorenzo de Medici was an Italian statesman and de facto ruler of the Florentine Republic during the Italian Renaissance. He was called Lorenzo the Magnificent by Florentines. He was a diplomat, politician and patron of scholars, artists, and poets. He is probably best known for what he gave to the world of art. He gave large amounts of money to artists so that they could make very good artwork. When he died, the Golden Age of Florence ended. The peace he helped keep between the many Italian states collapsed when he died. Lorenzo de Medici is buried in the Medici Chapel in Florence.

Limbourg brothers

The Limbourg brothers, or in Dutch Gebroeders van Limburg, were famous Dutch Renaissance miniature painters from the city of Nijmegen. They were active in the early 15th century in France and Burgundy. They created what is certainly the best known late medieval illuminated manuscript, Les Tres Riches Heures du Duc de Berry.
